Eye Problems
The eyes are usually regarded as the window to the soul and so must be taken care of very well. Some of the problems among the elderly are:
Cataract : This is the capacity ( the quality of not allowing light to pass through) of the lens. It is common among adults and is one of the commonest leading causes of poor vision and total blindness in old people. It is more common among the diabetics and among the people who eat less protein.
Glaucoma: it is characterized by an increase in the internal pressure of the eye ball from an intraocular fluid pressure present within the eyeball. It is common among people past middle age of life and in women than men. Due to this pressure , retinal blood vessels are hampered leading to poor nutrition to and poor functioning of the retina.
Symptoms include headaches, eye pain, blurred or fossy vision, and loss of peripheral vision. It may be mild or acute. Since it van lead to blindness, early detection and medical treatment is a sure way of preventing blindness.
Presbyopia: According to National Institute For Aging (1986) it is a gradual decline in the ability to focus on close objects or to see small print. It is common after the age 40. People with this condition often hold reading materials at arms length and some may have headache problem can be easily compensated for with glasses or contact lenses.
